3 foot buzzing hornet at speed 100mph
1997 WRX V3 UK import
At speeds of unnecessariness (100+), I get the sound of an angry hornet coming from the passenger wing mirror area? I would call it a vibration, but it’s not, it’s a 3 foot angry hornet!! Seems to wind related, and increases the faster I go (with base not repetition).
Please could someone give some advice!
If you’ve had this problem or know of it, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about!
Sometimes (for other people using this site) it happens at a lower or higher speed and is also known as the "mobile phone interference noise".
Will appreciate any tips or advice!
Many thanks

Thanks for the quick replies!
Door seals ay? Just thinking of it, I did clean my car and applied a lubricant to the door seals to give it that “back to black” look! Unwittingly sabotaging my own car in the process maybe?
I’ll clean it off and see what happens.
I was also told it could be the scuttle panel, or the wing mirror, or the window, or the fuel pump. Funny, I don’t remember back to blacking those? But it gives me a lot to look at!!!
Please feel free to add to this list if you’ve had the same problem and have any more advice.
Many thanks

I get that from the drivers side at 130mph+ and it goes away if I push the window outwards around the wing mirror sort of area. It's damn annoying and a bit scary driving one handed at those speeds !!
I've never done a track day so that must have been on a motorway, oops ! Not driven that forst for a while now.
James.

Its the window seals - on the JapCrap cars
They are useless and also let water in on the older classic cars ruining the speakers in doors at the same time
I also get wind noise off the front windscreen to add to the noise at speeds above 90 mph - but this is usually when I'm going into a strong headwind

I've always had it and it's a royal pain in the ****. I've never tracked down what it was. I thought maybe the bonnet liner, but I don't think so now. On a still day it usually comes in at 100, but when it's windy it can come in earlier or later, sometimes up to 120-130 (on track or autobahn) and sometimes as low as 90 if I'm driving into the wind - gusts can cause brief buzzes then go away again. I'm gonna look at my window seals then. I wonder if shutting the fresh air vents would fix the problem? Or going to recirculating aircon? That would create higher pressure inside the car and maybe keep the seals tight?

The noise against the windscreen - (I have 2 different sound stages!!) is the effect of the wind hitting the lip at the front of the roof and the seals against the windscreen
A guy who owns a Foresster did tell me that it is cheaply fixable but I didnt take enough notice of the solution

Humm, interesting... I did explore the front window thingy.
If you think it’s related to the window seal deteriorating, then (apparently) you can go to your nearest window fitter and ask for them to fill around it. This is because the window is normally glued down and will possibly snap on removal. However, the covers around the window are removable. They will be able to silicone seal around it, and then replace the cover. Possibly removing your annoying vibration!
Think I’ll get it checked of for the piece of mind but I wouldn’t be too angry if it’s not the cause.
Anyone had this done???????????????????????
