Default CEL intermitent

Hi everyone,

Have my first problem with my MY'01.

Had the CEL appear 3 times now, but dissappears after a few restarts.

Have read into this on here and the fault code is removed after a few restarts if the fault does not persist. Correct?

Also read that the bugeye's crankshaft position sensor often shows an error after driving hard (all three times have been after short periods of hard driving). Correct?

With the CEL on, is performance reduced by means of protection like some cars do?

Any way of stopping this? I have a phobia of this light after problems with a previous car

Anyway, all help most welcome.

Regards,

Mark.

Scoobypedia | Trusted knowledge for everything Subaru | Scoobypedia browse explains how to read the codes but i believe you have to go to a dealer to get them checked.

You are correct, if the fault appears to have corrected itself the light will go out. But it might be worth getting it checked next time the light is on to see what sensor it dislikes. Might be that a sensor is on its way out, but these cars are well known for having random CELs. I have a my01 wrx and am sick of that bloody light now!

Yep..the Bugeye Random CEL generator !!

I have one too !!

If the car is running fine then I'd try and get the historic codes read off the ECU as cheap as possible......where are you ??

Unless the ECU thinks tthe engine is in danger then there will be no loss of power.

If there are multiple misfire codes then think about changing the neutral position switch (it's a long story !), if it's a camshaft position sensor error then learn to live with the CEL when you redline the engine LOL

Well i was out in it all night, and lots of hard driving, and it didnt come on once.

its going in for a service next week and i could get them to look at it, would like to know whats wrong, but as said, i could wait until it comes back up again and then check it out myself.

Neutral position switch?

Mark.

Yes the NPS can be the cause for the CEL appearing - particularly when the code stored is a "misfire on cylinder" X (car thinks gearbox is in neutral when it isn't).
I've had mine replaced 3 times now. In my case the CEL would not go out by itself though - it needed to be reset.
If it does turn out to be the NPS ask your dealer to perform the "modification" that reduces the over sensitivity of the switch - international motors are aware of this procedure if your dealer isn't - something to do with inserting a washer/spacer. Since I've had this "mod" (over a year) i have never had any further issues.

I had the CEL show on my 02 wrx after booting it to overtake - it went off after about 3/4 ign on/off's but I was still worried about it so bought a proscan diagnostic tool. Problem is it only reads what code the CEL code has stored when the light is still on, not hostoric ones (DOH!)

Funny how a little light bulb can scare you so much :-)
