MAF sensor cleaning
#1
Hi
I am working on an intermitent CEL. Code 32 but the O2 sensor is fine at low speeds. The voltage cycles as it should around .5 V. At 3000+ rpm cruising V is high. I have fitted a new O2 sensor and now want to clean the MAF sensor. I think there was a thread on this some time ago but i can't find it. What is the best /safest method of cleaning the MAF?. I will also do the TPS - how can i best clean this?
Any other ides would be very welcome.
Car is 94 legacy 2L
Thanks in advancew

I'll start then...I cleaned my MAF using carb cleaner...didnt work....MAF failed after a while nursing it....replaced it ....all ok....so far
Carb and intake cleaner...Halfords
MAF sensor....Subaru main dealer

Right then, the part no. quoted IS for 99-00 NOT for earlier cars.
The JDM cars use the same MAF as far as I'm aware.
To (try) clean the MAF, use airyar$ole spray version of carb and injection cleaner (Halfords).
Remove the air-box connection and the MAF housing will come off the car, best way is to remove the actual sensor from the housing...this has 'tamper-proof' screws, either use correct bits or small 'mole grips'...dont round off the heads.
With sensor out of housing, spray and watch the cr4p come off it, DO NOT WIPE it cos it is fragile
When youre happy its clean, put back in and try it
Sorry, dont have part no. for earlier models.
Cost, if you can source it is around £70...You may have to ask Subaru dealer to check their 'sub parts directory' as it may not show on their main computer d/base.
Hope this helps someone

MD - thanks anway for the info, I have a problem with my car in that it could be either MAF or boost valve (or poss something else), MAF has already been cleaned & still won't boost properly over 3000rpm.
Is there anyway of testing the MAF without trying it on another car ?
cheers

shunty, get hold of someone on drivetrain who can give you the voltages for the MAF output (poss J.Banks)
Try cleaning the boost solenoid using same spray, also you can plug in some plugs/sockets to make it 'cycle' and help clean it.
Also the pipes to/from solenoid actuator etc...clean/check condition.
Best o' luck

MD - I have got Kevin (ex Well Lane), coming into work this morning to take a look.
BUT, I do need to learn this type of stuff myself to a certain degree. I own a multimeter does that make me technical ?
at the end of the day, anthing that gives a reading, has an input, some code that calculates something & gives an output. So if I take me meter & stick x & y terminals on said input & output that will give me a reading (resistance factor ?)
I wish I had got into this stuff years ago then I would be a clevver bu55er as well like some of you lot.

just out of curiosity - If I WOT it gets to 3000rpm no probs & then struggles to boost & doesn't, revs continue to go up a bit but misfires, hesitates. This happens in every gear btw.
BUT, if I go through the rev range "slowly" then it seems to deliver the power ok, albeit a bit "lumpy", but no misfires or hesitation. This is also in every gear.
anyone care to venture a guess before Kevin comes?
MAF has been cleaned I have been told. RN Golden have confirmed that plugs & coil packs are ok as well. Air induction is also OK, runs K'n'N without any previous problems before.

Shunty, yes you was talking to yourself
I work on a building site and dont have i-net
Sorry I cant shed any light on the fault...and by the way, I only a divvy builder, not a clever multimeter owner at all
As you say, if you can read a meter AND hold the probes in place you will be ok once you know the specified outputs....
Good luck bud

looks like either MAF or coil packs...apparantly main dealers who say "yes we have tested the coil packs" when they havn't, unless you call looking at an electrical component & saying "yes, that looks ok then"......IT equivalent of taking a cpu out, holding it up in the air & saying....looks ok to me
so, more testing getting done on monday, with swap out bits.

Shunty,
My MY01 has the same problem exactly - I've been into the dealer and he reckons it's the MAF - but they're £266!!!!!! - let me know how you get on with swapping yours.
Regards

Cant remember if we discussed it ??? have you done an ecu error code check ?
Plugs under dash etc
It might give you some idea of the prob if the ecu has logged it.
The main dealer should be able to check the ecu also (?) using the select monitor.
Any closer to an answer ?

Dario - I have got a spare maf & a full set of coil packs coming tomorrow, so hopefully I will have something posted by late afternoon on mine.
You can buy the MAF seperatly apparantly, if you get the part number. Below is what I have saved from previous threads regarding MAF:
"ask your dealer to look at the 'sub' parts directory of the MAF and Housing.
ie MAF Housing with MAF = XXXXX part number
sub parts = MAF Housing = AAAAA part number
MAF = BBBBB part number
22794AA010PE - METER CP-AIR FLOW
MAFsensor details....£70 approx
01622 766008 (Walldonway Maidstone)"
Now I don't know if this is the part number for you, maybe one of the drivetrain junkies can help out on this one for you ?
After looking at the MAF, it looks like a sealed unit to me with the sensor bit in the middle. I imagine you have to carefully cut the back off it, but again get this checked by someone else first.
MD - kevin said that no ECU errors, cheers anyway though.
Lets hope it's either MAF or Coil packs, my moneys on the coil packs.
edited to add - I can spell "monies" really ya know

Outcome:
it was coil packs....although a new set of plugs did help a bit before these were replaced.
