Red face The Clutch the Gearbox the ............ I just want her happy!

Right after spending the best part of a week reading this thread that thread and trying to work out what’s wrong with my clutch (or thinking I had!) I’ve bleed the system (read enough on that alone!) replacing the tranny with new fluid. Hasn’t really made a difference tho……….

Anyway the problem I’m having is when trying to put it into gear it sticks I can always get it in (gear that is for any of you jokers) sometime its also hard to get out as well 1st and reverse seam the worst.

I also tried adjusting the clutch peddle bar which when adjust to the max (clutch bites very high) it was a little better but not a lot but it now rev’s out when on full load over 5k rpm.
It’s almost like a bar is in the way and it’s not moving to allow it into and out of gear.
Reverse grinds quite badly as well!

Could be the nut on 5th gear is loose, you're quite close to Zen or API, give them a call.

Where can I find this nut to tighten would it be worth checking the others as well? 2nd has slipped a couple of times when under load (I'm sure this could be the course) and have read that the nut could be the prob!

On the early cars >98 it is a box out job to do, it's only the later 99> cars that you can do the 5th gear nut whilst it's in the car.

By the sounds of it, you could have a bent gear linkage, it could be fouling somewhere. worst case is that you have a bent selector rod inside the box.

The clutch problem seems like you could do with a new clutch too.

Get the car up on a safe jack or axle stands, and see if anything is catching. If not, pop it to a specialist such as API or ZEN and see if they could diagnose the problem.

If it pops out of 2nd, then the problem could be that the syncro has gone and that is what is causing you all the greif.

box rebuild and a new clutch by the sound of it.

Sounds like a knackered clutch to me.

It's the same weather the engine is running or not though

and it pops out of second too...

not questioning your knowledge David, just wondering if you read it fully?

Whatever the cause, clutch or not (and it sounds to me like a clutch problem) it's gonna want the gearbox off to have a look in the bellhousing at the very least? So surely that's what to do.

In that case the only real thing that can cause the problem with the engine turned off too, is a bent selector rod. Which is just as bad and needs the box out to check, in which case the clutch is there to see as well, right in front of you.

Hummmm.... is still tricky when engine is off though not as much as the engine is running. 5th and rev are very hard to select (when off) so if it’s still doing it when engine is off then it’s most likely a bent rod?

This morning the gears where working fine (with engine off)

e-mail from my in-law

I’m rather surprised that no one has mentioned a likely failure with the master cylinder or the slave cylinder. If either of these has failed, the result would be a dragging clutch or not being able to engage gear.

I think it’s really unlikely to be a bent selector rod or synchromesh unless you have really abused the car when engaging gears.

It could be a worn out clutch or knackered thrust race, the latter being more likely since the problem suddenly appeared rather than gradually. Bent rods, knackered synchromesh, worn clutch or knackered thrust race all require the gearbox out. Master or slave replacement is easier.

any more ideas...........
