what size socket to remove phase 1 heads from block

what size socket to remove phase 1 heads from block
trying to remove some heads from a block, but for the life of me I cannot get the bolts undone. I have tried a 12 sided 14mm socket and a 12 sided 9/16 socket and although they grip the come off when applying pressure.
What size should I be using and anyone any tips?

cheers dan, i have had a 1/2 socket and drive on them wouldnt budge, tried tapping the socket with a hammer but still nothing, so then resorted to a wheel brace thing that takes a 1/2 inch socket (big sturdy bar basically) and still nothing!
