Default Green Panel Filter

Just put one of these bad boys into my airbox last night and this morning i noticed 3 things

1) I get a very quiet ptshhhh when changing gear. You can only here it when the radio isnt on. I thought you only got this with cone filters?

2) I swear my turbo starts to spool abit earlier. Normally it starts around 3,200 rpm but this morning it was more like 3,000rpm

3) My prodrive exhaust has started popping!

So all in all what a bargain mod!

fitted a k&n to mine and you can definetly hear more intake noise and safe in the knowledge of engine bay heat staying out of the filter

fitting a green panel filter will improve performance a little but it would hardly be noticable, getting a green cotton was the first mod i did when i had my scooby, i think the correct term for such an experiance is the 'Placebo' effect, ha ha, after spending £40 on a new filter you really want it to make a difference that bad that you will convince yourself the car is faster, spoil up is sooner and revs pull all the way to the red line when in fact it was probably just a nice outside tempreture that made the car feel sweeter before the sun comes up heats the air and causes rises in IC temps,

Nice place to start though,

i added a "GREEN FILTER" and had a center decat only and the two combined gave me an extra 8bhp, however this could be down to rolling roads and air temp differences on the day.
But it will help in time im sure.

So is it worth going for a group n or the JDM sti? or is the green one good enough?

I bought a little used one on e-bay from a user of this site. I must admit I agree with the previous comments, there is some induction noise and the engine seems smoother with a quicker spool up.

Cheers barney

I'm going to get a Green Panel filter for my classic.

Think it will go well with the chip, de-cat downpipe and straight through system.

Had one in a couple of days now.

The air intake noise is marginally more noticeable than the standard STi filter.

I wasn't really expecting any noticeable performance increase but it does seem a little smoother, although as has been said it'll be negligable-if at all.

At £30 though it's worth a pop.

For those of you that have had one a while,do you follow the instructions and clean / oil it every 6 months or so?

Cheers

Should be ready to go! Sounds strange but you can smell the oil on it (well you can mine)

Just trim the lugs off the side so it fits better - no need to oil it.

Ollie,

The reason i was asking about the cleaning was because i've heard that a simple blow out is all that is really needed without the need of oiling.

How long have you left it,let me know what it looked like when you checked it.

Cheers

Yup, Green cotton filter here and I've got the "dump valve" sounding noise when pressing on and changing into second and third in an '06 STi. Is this normal..? Seems to be getting more pronounced as the miles roll by.

I got a whole cleaning kit with mine that I havent even opened so not sure whats in it. Im a bit wary of adding oil to it, because of the old MAF issue.

I think its been on for a couple of years (about 5-10,000 miles!!!), I'll try and dig out the receipt to find out. But hopefully i'll get to it at the weekend and take some pics for you.....

This is normal mate... i couldnt hear my dump valve at all for about the first 3000miles on my MY05 STi (although the first 1000 were done below 4k revs... and driven really carefully for running in).

After i gave it a good blast with about 3000 on the clock one day, i switched it off and it wasnt doing it... then the next time i went out (and ever since) its had the sound of the dump valve when i change gear sometimes. Took it to the local Impreza specialist and they said its completely normal...

--Back on Topic--

I have fitted the STi panel filter this week, and the car idles 100RPM lower now when upto temp (exactly 500RPM idle.. as opposed to 600-650 before hand). It also feels a little more refined/smoother, and spools about 500RPM sooner than before. Recommended for £50.00

Also fitted this:

Nice piece of kit... and on its own made things feel a little sharper. (Not suprising though if you take a look inside the standard item you will realise why.. its shockingly bad for smooth airflow)
Here is why:

I got mine from a member who was selling it here, but i was about a week away from buying one from here: David Hendry Cars - ZERO/SPORTS Impreza

Zerosports are one of the most respected Impreza tuners in Japan and with the exception of David Hendry, almost impossible to get over here.

Japanparts.com probably do them too... but DH will probably have them stocked in the UK already (so all the tax is sorted for you)

I was told years ago....DO NOT USE AN AIR LINE TO BLOW CLEAN A K&N FILTER!! Apparently it can destroy the filter material......perhaps why you can buy a proper cleaning kit which has no mention of blowing out.

SEE!!!

The instructions for the Green panel filter clearly state to blow out before cleaning !

All it says is to keep it at least 15cms away form the filter itself.I suppose it depends how much pressure is in the air but i would restrict the flow if using a compressed air line myself.
