Default Whining noise - increases with speed

No it's not the missus!

Speed related - stays the same when you put down the clutch when moving.

Just checked the wheels for play - jacked up each corner and no play.

What could it be?

No knocking on full lock - does this definitely rule out CV joint wear?

Or is it worse?

Going to France in two weeks - so need some ideas fast.

Any help gratefully received.

CV's tend to knock rather than whine.

Sounds definitely like the drivetrain so could be:

gearbox output shaft bearings
wheel bearings
diff bearings

Diff bearings usually change note as you ease on/off the throttle (you can 'play' the noise). Wheel bearings change on cornering - right hand bend = left side bearing gets louder. Feel the wheel bearings after a run to see if one is hotter than others. You can't always feel play in a bad bearing.

Thanks for that. I guess I'm hoping that it is a wheel bearing rather than a gearbox issue.

I'm going to get a mechanic from a local garage to come out for a spin on Monday to try to diagnose the problem. The thing is, if bearings don't necessarily show play, how do you know which one, if any to replace? On temperature alone? Or is there some mechanic's experience used in guessing?
