Default Safe boost level WRX wagon

Hi all,

Just fitted a manual boost controller and wondered what a safe boost level is for my car. I am currently running it at 12psi (from the stock level of 10psi) which equates to about 0.8 bar. Is it ok to continue running at this level safely?

I am running an uprated air induction kit with replacement air resonator box, decat center pipe with chrome racing systems back box and TD04 turbo.

I have a B3 ecu which I think has a fuel cut around the 14psi mark (I hit it at around that boost and quickly adjusted the MBC back down to 12!! Too many turns, my mistake! ). Is it worth removing this and replacing with a Z4 / Z5?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

WRX (1995/96) ECU Z4 - 12.71psi, dropping to 11.78psi @ 6600rpm. Fuel-cut 15.65psi

If you have a td05 you can run upto 1.4bar (but with an uprated fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator) but that's taking it to the extreme but in your post in 'Electrical' you may have a td04 in which case i don't know.

My ecu is a B3 - I take it the fuel cut and boost levels are different then? I am running a TD04 turbo as it is a wagon.

Should I be swapping the ecu, or upgrading with a chip?

Fuel cut and boost will be different take a look at PolarPerformance (run by a guy called Scott T who posts on here) see what they can do to your ecu.

Default wagon td04

Cool someone else with a wagon.

i have a wrx wagon. running with a TD04, an a manual boost controller And a U8 MINES ecu, now ive hit the fuel cut at around 14.5psi (or at least i think it was, the punch in the chest was rather frightening by the fuel cut) so i turned in down Pronto. am running the TD04 at just under 13psi, and it runs fine!

ive just got me hands on a TD05 an i cant WAIT!!!! to feel the difference!

Dont use a Z4/Z5 with a TD04, its the incorrect map for that turbo (its for a TD05). The best thing to do would be to purchase a scott.T scoobyECU mapped for the TD04. Boost will be raised to about 1bar with fueling to suit. Id say you would get more power with a TD04 and scott.T chip (see polarperformance website) than a TD05 with a Z4, and it would spool a good chunk earlier in the rev range. Likewise if you get a TD05 I'd plonk a Scott.T TD05 mapped chip in which would give 1.1bar.

Better still get a custom remap with the ESL live mapping kit.

Cool guys, thanks for all the replies. Avoiding the Z4 altogether now as I haven't the money for a TD05 at the mo.

Cranked up the manual boost controller to 13psi and to be honest, I am a happy fella at the moment, to me it is going like the stink!!

God knows how I would handle it with the Polar Performance upgrade!!!

I seem to be leaving most things behind! I know I am not at the state of tune of most STI's but just being able to give one a run for its money is enough for me!!

Any idea's on what sort of power output I might have now with that boost setting, de-cat center, Chrome Racing back box and induction filter on a WRX wagon? Feels like a new car to me right now, so I must have made a reasonable difference!

I know its probably going to set you back almost £200 but I really would recomend the scoobyECU or an ESL chip if there are still any around. They will not only raise boost but adjust fueling/timing to suit which just cranking up the manual boost controller will not.

It was the best £200 I spent on my car by far. I think stock the wagon is 220ps, so you have possibly upped it to nearer 240ish. with a decat downpipe and scoobyECU you'd see 270, that would be a dream to drive on a TD04.

I have to admit it does sound very tempting and I think it will definately be in the wish list....just a shame the wallet doesn't stretch at the mo!

These Scooby ECU upgrades / ESL upgrades, will they suit a TD04 then? I had been told I need a TD05 or was this mis-information?

Stock WRX wagon to Japanese test standards is 240, which is about 215-220 to EU test standards, those mods will see you at about 240-245 (EU) I would think.

Cool, thanks for the rough estimate. It certainly feels much more spirited!! The dash from 50 - 70 went by in no time flat!!

Think I will wait and buy a few more bits before forking out on a RR session. Not looking for massive power but getting to the 270 mark would be good enough for me!

Subaru Impreza FAQ

Check out 2.1.1 here. All WRX wagons up to august 1996 were 220ps (<220bhp). They have the TD04 turbo not the TD05 of the saloon, which is what accounts for the difference.

SCoobyECU's/ESL chips are available for the TD04, just make sure whoever supplies you knows that you want a TD04 map.

With regards to mods keep it simple. All thats needed at this level is a panel filter and decat exhaust/backbox. Sounds like you have the filter and backbox taken care of so just decat the downpipe and add a chip mapped for the TD04 and you will have an awesome car.
