An engine rebuild will cost you about 2.5-3k, a second hand engine could cost you 1.5k and blow up 3 months later, so id go for the engine rebuild

you'd also need loom and ecu, get an engine from the right car, eyes peeled on ebay, you'll get one for 4-600

I see you dont quite understand
A second hand engine will come with a very limited warranty, it could literally blow up after 3 months, a full rebuild on the other hand will be warrantied for longer and you know (depending on who's built it) that its going to last rather than spend on 2 or 3 "used" engines
Simple point to this, either do it right in the first place or dont do it at all, ie dont buy the wrx with a spent engine, buy one with one that works or with the extra cash, buy something newer.

PROVIDING that the inlet manifold studs are all in a line and not offset. Offset type is 99 on and gives all manner of problems that are not solved just by changing the heads.
