Default Remap = better MPG?? Definitive Answer Please!

Hey guys

After a few weeks ownership of a 03 JDM Spec-c the poor MPG has taken me by suprise (i knew it was bad, just not this bad)

I am getting approx 200 miles to a tank (normal/granny driving).

The car is on the standard JDM map.

Now i have been told that these run very rich, and if i get a remap i will see 260-270 miles per tank.

Can anyone confirm this to me please?!?!?!?

As its gonna be the difference to keeping or selling the car.

Cheers
Mat

my standard 208bhp classic gave 22mpg on average, now with nearly double the power I average nearly 30mpg

thanks for the info.

Reading a few MPG threads, seems the classics always return better mpg!

I think you will find that it will improve the MPG.

Your map currently (if it hasnt been re-mapped for UK fuel already) will be tuned to run on 100+ Octane... the max we have is 99 (Tesco or V-Power) which are actually probably only 98+RON.

I would eat my car if you didnt get better MPG after a remap from a decent mapper. (terms and conditions apply)

You should get a noticable improvement if the car is mapped on the road as that allows the mapper to pay strict attention to the closed/openloop transition and low boost fueling which is where poor consumption normally comes from. Certainly its something I like to take a lot of trouble over.

cheers

Cheers for the replys.

Thats the next option then, pay the money for a re-map and hope it gives me acceptable MPG, or just cut my losses and sell.

Owning and running a Subaru is never cheap, having the extra mpg after a remap is a bonus, but it isnt going to make a significant dent in servicing/running costs

My 03STi standard 23 mpg, remapped 27 mpg. At 10000 miles per year saves 60 gallons at £4.50/gal = £270 saved. Remap can actually pay for itself over 2-3 years.

Cheers for the replys, keep em coming!

I knew the Spec-c would be thirsty!

Normal driving, a-b is fine,a s you dont really notice it, and my trip to work is shortish, so i can make a tank last a week.

Its when u wanna go any sort of distance.

Like i went on a 350 mile round trip the other weekend, ended up costing me over 100 quid !!! Which is loads when u have to add that onto any trip you make!

curious about the 98RON not 99RON claim, any evidence to back that statement up?

I get around 16mpg! But I drive it like it supposed to be? And whats the point in a remap if your going to take it steady! So I say no as my remap makes me drive harder.....

I must be getting about 8 mpg but then my 2.5L is mental and that's with Bob helping me out with decent fuel map - my fault for wanting max horses for courses.

When I had my 2L first remapped she def was better on mpg and power, the exhaust was cleaner also which kinda goes to confirm the oe map from Subaru isn;t perfect - I think its to do with a "safe" setup for various fuels and driving conditions since some scooby owners use cheap fuel. When I went for my first turbo/injectors etc mod, the mpg was still better under normal driving conditions!! This only changed if you were using full boost and driving like an animal.

'05 JDM STi - 20/21mpg when I got it, with a basic UK fuel remap from Litchfield.

One decat Milltek/K&N filter/remap and its now 360bhp (near as darn it) and I get 22mpg. 20 miles extra per tank, or thereabouts.

All I need to do is drive 500,000 miles and the exhaust and remap costs are repaid

Doubt the JDM gearing helps with the mpg much...you must be doing some revs on the motorway?

Can't remember to be honest - off the top of my head, its around 3500 rpm at 70 I think? 4000-4500 rpm if not doing 70, but not too going mad

Classic again I'm afraid but:

97 UK car 208bhp standard 27.4mpg over 5000+ miles

240 - 290 during mods without properly suited map 25.8mpg 4500miles

305bhp finally sorted 27.1mpg 2000miles only so far but I'm driving more quickly of course. How can you not

Less scientifically I used to get about 24mpg round town in traffic and since remap I got 26.1mpg

i own a uk sti bug eye MY52 i have had it around 6 weeks and have only ever filled it up once and that was to go on a 320 mile round trip to wales and back
and i managed to squeeze 320 mile out of a full tank
kept it around 70-80 on the motorway and run it on shell v-power

on short trips to work and back all week it will do around 115 mile on £20 with a couple of 5 car over takes down the lanes

dont know what bhp my car is
it has 4 inch exhaust, induction kit, and bailey dumper

dont tend to drive it like i stole it

do they get better mpg on or off boost....???

I used to run my JDM classic on optimax and booster and get about 23mpg, after an Apexi and remap at Zen, I now get about 27mpg.

On a recent trip to the ring, I thought my fuel gauge was knackered when I was getting around 300 miles per tank on the drive there

the only factor that will make mpg worse is the temptation to use the extra power more.

mine is more economical now than the day I bought it and power is up substantially

Got 30mpg recently on long run to Nurburg and regularly get 270 + to a tank from short trips, ocassional blasts and town driving.

bit of a silly question though; more air from the turbo is going to require more fuel...which isn't going to improve your fuel economy

Why oh why do people buy Imprezas then whinge about fuel economy.
Surely common sense tells you they arent cheap to run.

I recommend buying a diesel.
