Go for a Subaru OE water pump and steel gasket, you wont know what shims you will need to do your tappets untill you measure the clearances on the re-assembly.

What year heads? Only early cars had hydraulic tappets, the rest use bucket followers with either under bucket (sti) or over bucket shims. You'll also need to add a modine if you're rebuilding a blown bottom end. Best place for one stop shopping and great advice is Mark at Lateral Performance.

A modine is a standard oil cooler fitted prior to your oil filter. After a bottom end failure parts of metal worn from crank, pistons, liners and bearings etc depending on what part failed collect within the cooler. So rather than refit the old cooler which are difficult to clean, it's always safer to buy new.
11mm ARP stud bolts are a good investment over Subaru standard items. As reduces the risk of head movement of in which leads to head gasket failure.

oil cooler..

there should be no need to change the tappets... my spare engine has 200k on it and is a 96 and the tappets are fine in it.

Should be Hydraulic Lifters on a 96 - they just need stripping and cleaning out before refitting.
