Default Intercoolers

Ok so after a previous post on intercoolers, people seem divided on what's 'best'. TM or FMIC.

Basically over the course of time I want to get in the region of 270-310 bhp mark without adding extra strain on the engine or having to upgrade internals. This sort of power should be fine on standards shouldn't it?

Plans are:
Blitz Nur spec r system which removes center cat. not jumping on the Nur Spec wagon but I haven't heard a bad word on them and have seem them for 400 quid posted.

Downpipe with cat removed.

Let me get this straight first. the exhaust consists of rear section and back box, - middle section with cat,- downpipe with cat - turbo - up pipe -header.. right?

Up pipe

Green panel filter

Ported headers - can this be DIY done?

Intercooler V8 STi TM or FMIC?? How about this Tm which is bigger than the standard STi.. NEW Subaru Impreza V Large Top Mount Intercooler (TMIC) on eBay Performance Tuning Parts, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (item 290141719351, end time 31-Jul-07 18:20:11 BST) A lot of you recon the FMIC gives a lot of lag and partially takes away from the fun driveability of it..

Remap

Are the standard injectors and pump ok for this setup or are bigger needed?

Roughly what power would be expected from thi setup?

Cheers and any advise or different opinions welcome.

Damien

So what model year car is it ?

Nur spec is loud and detracts from performance in my experience due to incompatable resonance in the gas column.

Injectors/pump ... you should change the pump but what car ? that will determine wether injectors are capable.

New age STi intercooler/scoop/tray is a v good upgrade.

cheers

Sorry should have stated, car is Uk turbo 2000 1999 year. 215 bhp standard if I'm correct. Was thinking about the newer intercooler and scoop setup, but from what year/model?

What exhaust system is recommended then? I'm not an all out noise lover but I do like the lumpy Massey 135 sound from the flat 4.
Don't want to spend silly money either like some systems are for little extra gains.

Well if you read Andy Fs website, he suggests that your current fuel pump/intercooler and injectors are all fine upto 320bhp:

AndyForrestPerformance

In fact he says the 99-00 intercooler/injectors are good for 350bhp?

If you are after 300-310, then perhaps all you need are:
  • full exhaust swap (although I'd stick with a Sports Cat d/pipe to avoid MOT hassles, Ninja @ £299 highly recommended)
  • panel filter - green/JR/K&N
  • turbo swap - VF23/24/28/35 or TD04 hybrid
  • ported headers are possible DIY - reduce spool up time
  • Ecutek Tek3 remap.
A lot of people swap the fuel pump 'just in case', but opinion split on this - there was a recent huge thread about this involving a certain pslewis

If you don't want to swap turbo, and are happy with 270-280 then:
  • full exhaust swap (although I'd stick with a Sports Cat d/pipe to avoid MOT hassles, Ninja @ £299 highly recommended)
  • panel filter - green/JR/K&N
  • Ecutek Tek3 remap.
I have a MY00 and with this set-up produced 273bhp/273lbft - I drive mainly around town so stuck with the TD04 for very early spool-up.

Just to clarify.....

Its 330bhp I suggest as the maximum for the 99-00 tmic, even thats pushing it a bit !
I also said the 440cc injectors can run to 350bhp but only with increased fuel pressure, as would achieved by an uprated pump and an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.

I currently have an MY99 UK turbo with;
Uprated Walbro fuel pump
Green panel filter
Magnex full system and downpipe
Ecutek remap

I have 270bhp with similar torque. However.......just bought a VF28 turbo, Fuelab fuel pressure regulator and an Sti version 8 intercooler.
Its going to AndyF for a remap early Sept and should produce 320bhp and 300-320lbsft torque.
Thats about the max I am taking mine to till the gearbox and clutch go.

Cheers.
All very helpful indeed.

I have a Green filter on the way soon and hopefully an exhaust before the end of summer.

I'm going to try and source an STi intercooler setup and scoop. Can someone confirm the year and model etc. I need to be looking for.

Also when i'm looking around breaker yards I might keep an eye out for a turbo. Does anyone have a turbo model list and what car model/year they can be found on. I've searched for ages and haven't found much!

Where can I purchase a Ninja exhaust?

Cheers

Decat
Green Panel
VF24/28/34/35 or TD05FE
And a Remap to 1.3bar approx

Should see you at or around 300BHP

I was running :

Car : MY00 UK Turbo
Decat
VF28
STi Panel Filter
ECUTEK 3
Standard MY00 TMIC
Standard Injectors
Standard Pump/Fuel Pressure
1.3bar (approx)

Recorded 309BHP/296ftlb at Power Engineering
BUT...with a mug of water poured onto the Intercooler is hit 321BHP.

This prompted me to upgrade the intercooler to an STi7 unit (see my thread in projects)

The car now runs :
Decat
VF28
Green Panel Filter (better airflow then STi)
Apexi Power FC
3-Port Boost Solenoid
STi 7 TMIC
Standard Injectors
Standard Pump/Fuel Pressure
DIY Ported headers
1.35bar

Recorded 305BHP/305ftlb on a recent RR day at Surrey RR (which use a Dyno Dynamics RR IIRC)

OK so the power is down slightly, but the torque is up. And I am also lead that the newer technology of the RR at Surrey is more accurate.

There was also approx 2 years between these 2 runs.

Also PE run the cars in 4th on their rollers, whereas as Surrey use 3rd gear, so it doesn't quite achieve the boost it makes on the road.

I know the car feels better......
