there is a standard sensor that normally is in the plastic feed that goes to the inner wing air box.

this is the sensor that the apexi used (black come shape thing)

Should there be an air temperature sensor on a JDM WRX MY97? my commander is not reading any air temp sensor?

dont think there is an air temp sensor on the v3-v4 model

The WRX models did not have the air temp sensor, only the STi came with the air temp sensor. Someone on here did retro fit an air temp to his 98 WRX though.
On the 99-00 STi's the air temp sensor was built into the the maf sensor and was not a separate sensor like the earlier cars.
