Default Help Overheating & Temp Gauge Like A YoYo!

hi i have an 1996 type r and it has started overheating. i give it some beans and it seems fine no overheating, engine check light off etc but then as you come back down to a cruise speed the temp gauge rockets up. but if you put your foot down again then the temp gauge shoots straight back down to normal. under the bonnet its losing coolant out of the plastic overspill tank on the passenger side of car aswel. any help would be greatly appreciated.

cheers martyn.
