Dave an ARB is essentially a spring between your wheels (after all a coil spring is just a torsion bar wound in circles), by being connected to each wheel, when one wheel rises (or the other falls) the bar is twisted and tries to resist the movement, so as a car rolls in a corner the inside wheel falls from the arch, the outer wheel rises into the arch, the ARB is twisted helps resist this body roll. You could have the same effect with stiffer springs but it would cause wheel control and ride comfort issues in a straight line.

Yes they replace the standard item. The standard ones are 17mm and 19mm I think.

The norm is to upgrade to a 22mm on the front and an adjustable 22mm on the back.

Or just the 22mm adj at the rear if your wallet's having a bad month.

I've read that for a FWD car you put one on the back and a RWD car you put it on the front.

By putting it on the back does this affect the car the most in terms of handingling then on our 4WD cars ?

You stiffen up the end that has more relative grip as standard, FWD cars tend to understeer so you stiffem the rear, RWD cars tend to oversteer (well with more power than stock it becomes more prevalent) so you go with the front first (or remove the rear you had!).

Most Subaru's understeer, so most people stiffen the rear ARB first as it gives a lot of benefit for not much buck (I'm using an Sti take off, just £13.50 from the well known internet auction site), being cheaper than springs and or shocks.

As you have a 93WRX, I would suggest starting with either an STi takeoff (20mm from late cars, not the earlier cars 18mm) or a Whiteline rear bar, if you plan other mods later, start with the adjustable (if you go with the whiteline option), but if your not planning too many further mods then stick with the fixed 22mm.
