Default 4" decat down pipe???

on USA flea bay at the moment is a 4" down pipe, that tapers off into 3" to fit centre exhaust flange....is there any gains to be had with this 4" system? ive never seen a 4" one before (no jokes please)
i know its good to get rid of exhaust gasses but is 4" an overkill? considering it goes back into 3"
maybee if it was 4" all the way out i could understand.
any thoughts?
