TD04 Hybrid, then ported headers, and up pipe, etc. Keep standard TMIC, uprate the fuel pump and you will still get easy 320 bhp and torque to match.
And you get to keep the TD04 and its wonderfully low spool up, the fact its a hybrid TD04 makes it pull all the way to the redline instead of dying around the 5500 rev mark.
My own experiences are more negative than most with the vf34, but like all things, its subjective to what you have done, who did it, etc, etc.
To do it again, i would have what i have put above here.

I believe they are listed on the Scoobynet shop site, but Andy Forrest sells them.

There will be other places though.

Another vote here for the TD04 hybrid , the VF34 is great for those looking to see 350hp , but for less power than that the TD04 is much nicer on the road....

I have a vf 34 on my 99 classic producing 333bhp, it does seem to take a while to spool up, about 3500 before it really starts pulling hard, as the other guys also say i would go for something like a td04 hybrid for low down spool (or possibly a vf35)

Another vote for the TD04 Hybrid BTW. Has plenty of top end - quite a bit better than the std TD04.
According to Andy F, the difference betwen it and the VF35 is typically 20bhp, 300 revs and a little more lag.

Yes my car was fitted with a TDO4 hybrid when i bought it. Honestly there isn't really any discernable difference in spool up time and and the vf35 pulls so much harder. Cheap as chips too i bought mine for 200 quid off fleabay!!

Yep I've got a VF34 on my 2002 WRX, 550's injectors full decat, STi 8 intercooler, and of course an Andy.F remap. (348bhp / 320lbft)
Got it mapped Thursday past, turbo kicks in at about 3k and is extremely smooth all the way up.
Took a wee bit of getting used to from the original turbo but I
