Diagnose My Car Please
Hi
The symptoms are
Feel free to laugh at the thunks and clunks description.
Any suggestions and ways to self diagnose much appreciated.
Thanks
Jon
The symptoms are
- Knocking noise from the rear, sounds like clunk, clunk, clunk, but not in such a consistent pattern sounds like a couple of quick clunks then a few sec’s of nothing then another burst of clunks. Then a couple of clunks then a few sec’s of nothing and repeat.
- The noise sounds like a hollow thunk/clunk,
- Almost constant but does not get faster or slower if I speed up or slow down
- The sound also doesn’t appear to get any louder with the windows down.
Feel free to laugh at the thunks and clunks description.
Any suggestions and ways to self diagnose much appreciated.
Thanks
Jon

What year is it?
Is it the dreaded rear strut problem? Easy way i found to check this was to open the boot & push up & down on the rear of car, i could hear my rear struts making a cluncking noise.
As its a 02 sti ppp & no warranty, subaru wanted £223 + vat + fitting EACH, i managed to source a set of e-bay brand new £220 delivered for the pair, yes the pair, my local garage charged me £20 a side fitting saved over £300 on just the purchase price.
hope this helps

I have done about 200 miles on these new struts & dont feel any difference.

Hi
Thanks for the quick and detailed reply, I should of said though that I'm currently running AST' so I dont think its the rear strut. I will check them though.
Oh and the car is a Classic.
Thanks again.
Jon

Sorry to leap on the thread, but are the shocks in the ebay link direct replacements for the OEM shocks ? I have a MY01 bugeye with knocking rear and suspect it's the shocks. Could I buy these, use the springs/tops off my existing red STi shocks ?
On the original posters problem, does it seem to be affected by road surface, ie 'clunk' when you go over speed bumps, potholes etc. Make sure the antiroll bar is secure and the droplinks are ok, also check that the exhaust isnt catching on the rear diff.
Other that laying in the boot with a stethoscope whilst someone drives around I'm stuck on how to locate my clunking noise too. I did have the cunning plan on putting a mic in the boot connected to the laptop to see if I could work out where it was coming from.
Cheers
