Unhappy Scoobys got a new bad habit - Smoking!!!!!

Hello chaps, my 93 impreza has just started 'smoking' from the engine bay!
Oviously I've got a leak of some kind. Once shes up to temperature shes off! puffing away!

On a serious level, The 'smoke' ( which smells Oily) seems to originate from the front of the manifold?..I know Ive got a leak with my power steering and recently thats needed topping up alot more. ( I need a new steering rack Ive been told)

The engine oil level doesnt seem to be going down at any abnormal rate. There does seem to be alot more oily substances around the sump area.

HELP! any ideas lads please would be greatly appriciated oh and Ive tried the nicorette patches - they didnt work!!!!

Thanks

Swift C

Rocker cover gaskets leaking on to the headers hence the nasty smell and scarey looking smoke.

Its a tricky DIY job due to limited space but possible. Phone Roger Clark for the spares, explain to them whats happened and they will send out all the bits. Should be about £40 of parts then just your time. The bolts torque up to 10Nm.

Or you could phone your local Scooby specialist for a quote to do the work for you.

check the power steering bottle...they tend to leak from the the base..

It leaks then runs down behind the cambelt covers and drips on to the exhaust heat shield.....

..if it is leaking do not bother getting a new washer...remove the full unit...completely degrease it to death the seal it with som kind of seriuos loctite...then leave it for 24 hours to completely cure before fitting.

Re - powersteering bottle-tank
On early WRX it is of a poor design and it leaking is a common fault.
Personaly I would replace it with the later version as found on the classic - which is far stronger.
They redesigned it for a reason
Hope this helps

could be a crankshaft or camshaft seal at the front of the engine. This happend to me, not losing much oil but it was spurting out and running down the sump, and spraying on to exhaust manifold, which mad ait smoke pretty badly. Seal should only be a few quid but its a timing belt off jobby.good luck
