It depends on the tyre. The best way is to get the tyre manufacturer to tell you given the weight of the vehicle, max speed, camber etc.
A 225/35 Pirelli on an earlier car needs 38/35 for Pirelli to be happy about them carrying the weight but this may not give the best handling.

It depends on the individual tyre. A 225/40ZR18 92Y Pirelli is good at 33/32 but if another tyre has a lower load rating or very soft sidewall and you've got an STi you'd be in trouble at that pressure. Some Goodyear tyres fitted to Imprezas have suffered this problem and customers have reported cracking on the inner sidewall due to the fact that the tyre is overloaded at the pressures being run.
