Default 03 STI 2.5 conversion, easy?

My 03 Sti ppp has suffered a terminal fault and is at the moment fcuked!, Been looking at my options, rebuild/recon unit/secondhand unit etc....

I have noticed that on Roger Clarke motorsports web site they have a 2006 2.5 STI short engine for half the price I can get a 2.0 lump, so here goes.... Is this a straight swap? or am I looking at new heads /cams /headers etc? and has this conversion been done? Any help or advice would be great before I ring up and make a **** of myself! lol

cheers

What happened to your car mate? Sounds like you've had a bit of bad luck!

I'm doing one myself at the moment, the Shortblock is a straight swap, you will need to bolt your heads to the 2.5, Get your heads check before you do this though, the one I'm doing has a cracked head. You just need to make sure you get the correct head gaskets to keep the correct compression ratio, Cometic make 1.3 mm gaskets which are commonly used for this conversion.

The only problem you will have is the standard 2.5L lump you will get from RCMS is not recommended to rev more than 7500 rpm and the 2.0l STI can rev to 8000 rpm.

Got a good deal myself getting a built block direct from America (forged rods, acl Bearings, Wisco Pistons etc.) that revs to 8500 rpm.

Well, We think 1 or more big ends picked up, at speed this caused crank/conrod damage which is gonna cost good money for any repair, I was just hoping I could do the 2.5 conversion and maybe save a few quid at the same time!

I'm not too worried about the loss of 500rpm off the top end,(just think of the low down torque! lol) Also, would the engine run ok on the PPP map untill a proper remap could be carried out or will this be a must straight away,

Thanks for the info! It's what i'm wanting to hear!

True, Turbo will boost around 500 rpm earlier anyway with the 2.5.

Yes, Unfortunately will need to be Mapped straight away, would not chance it on the ppp map as the Compression ratio will be slightly different and because of the extra cc's.

As it is a new engine, would not a period of run-in be essential before a re-map? The ppp map would be ok for this I guess?

Thanks again!

Bad news is, would need a new map to do your running in with, then mapped again when engine has been run in.

The Cranks have the exactly the same flyweel bolt holes so your existing clucth will fit, but with the extra torque from a 2.5, not sure how long it would last, so best to put an uprated one on while the engine is out.
