Default sports cat

I recently purchaced a 100 cell sports cat downpipe for my uk MY98 impreza turbo, bolted it on and kept the standard catted centre section on aswell.

Put the car through it's MOT and it failed misserably on emmisions.
It is running on the standard ecu,and i wondered if this should be a problem,eg standard ecu cannot be remapped due to year of car.

Was the catalytic converter adequately warmed up? If it was only a short drive it may not have hot enough. They need to be really hot in order to properly function. Wrapping it with heat shielding may help it heat up and stay hot. If it was a short drive running it at higher RPMs while waiting for the test might do the trick. When we had emissions checks here in Florida I had to take some real hot laps around the inspection station before my Lotus Esprit S1 would pass.

He is dead right.
The sport cat MUST be stinking hot when the analysis is taken. The MoT man should do this anyway in the station.
A long tick-over is no good.

When I last had my car MOT'd it was a 40 mile drive to the garage (so the sports cat would have been nice and hot) Unfortunately, I had a half hour wait! Was getting a bit worried that it might have cooled down too much to be effective. Got past the emissions with no issues though - I guess the heat wrapped downpipe must have kept things sufficiently toasty!
