Air Con Or Not ?

My 96 wrx has a/c button but it doesnt light up or give any indication its on.
Are the buttons standard fitment whether car has air con or not ?

As far as i know all jap imprezas had aircon (some like the RA they were optional)
Turn the cooling dial to cold,turn the heater on,then press the button in and it should light up and cold air (obviously) will start blowing (may notice a small drop in revs as the compressor kicks in.
