Default IHI VF35

Can somebody tell me about the VF35 turbo as I've read several reports on the internet and they nearly all contradict them selves.

It is a ball bearing turbo, it isn't a ball bearing turbo...

Its Identical to the VF34 apart from the divided thrust, it has a smaller turbine than the VF34.....

It goes on.

Help me please

its a NON ball bearing turbo, cheaper version of the VF34 basically - except from memory it has a smaller exhaust housing to aid spool.................

Hmm, the more I read the more I'm seeing that. I read a P16 instead of a P18 though but it still doesn't mean alot to me . Mines got one on and I'm just trying to work out what potential it has.

I read on the US sites that the VF34 will max out between 365-390hp, seems a little high to me but is this right?

What kind of max boost are they good for and basically, what can i expect from the car with the VF35 turbo, with supporting mods.

Cheers,
Nick.

VF34 = between 340 and 360 relaistically 1.5-1.6bar ish
VF35 = between 320 and 340 typically, people have had more but then people have had less too its all in the mapping....

Not knowing much about it I've spent the last 3 weeks asking the same questions as you and getting so many different answers. I was just confused. As most said there wasn't a huge difference I went for the IHI VF34 as it's bigger but I'm told spools pretty good as it's ball bearing. I didn't want to be driving with the VF35 for a couple of weeks secretly wishing I gone for the bigger turbo with more punch.

i doubt youd notice much difference in truth....the 34 isnt really "bigger" at all. Well, not significantly, althogh it is preferable to the 35 simply due to being ball bearing

You'll notice the difference in spool before you'd notice any difference in punch mate. I very much doubt there is enough between them in power output to be discernable, whereas a couple of hundres rpm difference in spool threshold you will notice. To give you an idea, my MY99 now produces the same torque at about 2700 rpm as the std car did at its peak.

IMHO Two turbos, v. similar outputs, choose the one with the best spool characteristics for everyday use.

Steve Simpson will be mapping the car come June/July if he's not busy so we'll see what the VF35 will kick out with minor supporting mods.

I'm guessing its not a bad turbo, just maybe not as good as some fitted as standard, right?

The VF35 on my bugeye STi seems really lazy imo. Doesn't wake up till 3000rpm and gives a real good kick up the **** at 4000rpm.

Just hoping the de-cat 3" turbo back pipe will help on that front.

VF35 same as on STi8?

Hi Andy,

316ft lbs peak torque at 4500rpm at the moment mate. Should be even better when I get a decent FMIC on there as I'm still on the MY99 std intercooler, which is about at its limits.

IIRC the std classic had a peak torque figure of 215lbs ft at just over 5000rpm

Certainly makes a BIG difference.

No, APi ported headers!

Definately reccomended if you're going for a bigger turbo; helps offset the slightly higher boost threshold.

I had a VF35. IIRC it had a P15 exhaust housing which is very small, the VF34 had a larger (i.e. better matched to the compressor side). The VF35 is definitely not a ball bearing turbo, the VF34 is.

It's a great turbo for 300bhp+ but not much more I'd say. It can be driven to higher outputs at say 1.4 bar which was what mine was mapped for, but it's not its natural territory. Spools very nicely and to me seemed like a TD04 which keeps pulling to the redline.

There's a few VF35's making 320-350 on here, mine for instance has made 332 @ Powerstation, which is a very good figure..

Definitely my choice, especially for UK 5 sp boxes. IMO the vf34 mated to the longer uk ratio's is to laggy/unresponsive. The 35 spools aprox 4-500 rpm lower (all else being equal) and although this doesn't sound much, on the road (real world), it makes a huge difference..!

However, as Neilo says, it all in the mapping..
