What does a fekked turbo sound like?
Started the car this morning and heard a metallic rattling coming from the engine.
On lifting the bonnet, it seems to centre on the turbo, and it doesn't seem to be a loose heat-shield, as the engine was cold so I was able to hold it, and it made no difference.
So what does turbo-bearing failure SOUND like?
Is there any way of telling, bar taking it to a garage?
And if it IS turbo failure, what sort of price am I looking at?
TIA, Alcazar

There's also a lower turbo heat shield, and the up pipe heat shield fixings commonly rust, and rattle.
With the engine idling, put a long rod, or screwdriver against the turbo, and handle to your ear. Blip the throttle, and you'll soon hear if the turbo is whining, or rattling.
Mark.

Update
OK, the bad news is that it's NOT the heat shields, (Or rather "shield", since it's decatted and only has one).
Garage has had a quick look, found a very loose wastegate actuator, and something rattling IN the downpipe.
It's off the road at the mo, and in for strip and diagnosis next Tuesday.
Bummer.
