Default MY05 JDM STI, Tapet Noise,!!! Help Please

Hi,

Got a Feb 2005 STI Jap Import with only 9000 Miles on now, Over the last 3-4 weeks i have noticed a tapping nosie from the right hand bank of the engine. I have been told its Tappet noise.

Spoek to Subaru today and they said its 16 Hour Job to put new shims in it, they havent heard the car yet but they did say they have never had one in for that fault.

Has any one else had this fault or simlar noise, or any where i should get it done.

Im using a Comma 5/30 Xtech at the moment,

Thats what i thought that the newages had been improved and should never come across this problem.

I wondered if it was something else like the camshaft slighty loose!!!, I dunno, id rather if i could cure it somw other way than have my engine taken apart.

Could be a loose spark plug or a cyl.head/header gasket "chuffing" - both these will give a similar noise to tappet noise.
Its unusual for the tappets to go suddenly noisy esp. on the later engines.

I have a March 05 Jdm sti zl and its the same and i am running Millers Cfs 10/60 oil and i have listened to both banks of cylinder heads with a long screw driver as a listening device can't hear anything so i think its the injectors that make tapping clicking noise.I had a classic my00 uk turbo before and the engine sounded the same but the Jdm sti with equal lenght headers is so quiet you hear more and i have owned the car since November 2005 .You could allways do the same test as i have done with a long screw driver or a wooden dowel as a listening device and check each side of your engine while its running

I did that today with a screw driver, and couldn't really make my mind up if it was any louder. If it was an injector why louder on why side than the other. And as i rev it up to say 2000 rpm at standstill the tap increase in speed......

How do you find the 10/60 in it, im running semi 10/40 comma?

Are you absolutely certain it's not a loose heat shield..?

Sometimes the odd injector becomes noisy (sticky), particularly if the car hasn't been used for a while, which judging by the fact it's only done 8k on 2+ years would seem to be the case with yours..?

If it is an injector it may well sort itself out with use, but you could try dumping in some injector cleaner into the fuel tank..?

Check those heatshields first..!

i wouldnt use the injector cleaner have you not seen what that stuff doesnt do the only way to sort injectors is to have them checked and cleaned properly try calling asnu they are a massive company just so happens my boss is a director for them

as for the noise id take it to subaru because a car can make loads of noises not the sorta thing you can suss on the internet

5w30 is TOO low for JDM engines as its got higher rev range.. use some proper oils m8 treat your car better

10w40 is what you need. i use motul 300v all the time on all my scoobs

I have an 05 JDM Sti9, it also had this clicking tappety type noise for a while. The car had only done 3000 miles in 18 months. Now I have 13k on the clock, and the noise is all but gone.

I agree with the comment about equal length headers. You hear a lot more stuff going on, induction rush of air, turbo spool up etc. Can make you paranoid. Whats that noise?

My last Sti was an 02 Euro spec with a full Magnex decat (ex Iain Litchfield demonstrator), and that was loud to drown out Jose Mourinho screaming for a penalty - except it would have run out of fuel before he drew breath!!

I have a JDM MY03 STi and when the turbo heat shield was taken off it was found to be broken. This could well be your problem.

I don't get or don't recall hearing any tapping noises on mine.
