Default Bad Engine knocking

Hi, I've got a UK turbo, 2000 classic. My engine has just started knocking quite bad. I was driving hard for a few miles and when i slowed down the engine started clanging and banging. When I accelerate its smooth and quiet but when I take my foot off the gas to say change gear it starts knocking. But its not all the time, its OK for 5 minutes then its bad for 5 minutes.
Its not smoking or losing oil and its not over heating. Its fine when I'm driving along the motorway, its just when I'm going slow through town.
Is the engine knacked beyond repair?
If I need to buy a second hand one do I have to buy the exact same model engine or will others fit. I'm thinking that if I can get a WRX one for the same price and it fits I might as well do that.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Luke.

Any ideas anyone? To make matters even worse the alternator packed up this morning on my van that I've been using while the cars sat at home.

Similar thing happened to me recently mate. Just sorting out a bottom end rebuild. Been told that mine should be just a bearing (hopefully) because i was quite close to home and heard the noise immediatly when it just started.

Speak to AP Motors, looks like they will be doing mine. Kevin and Andy have been very helpful.
