PROBLEM WITH 1998 SCOOBEY
Hi all.
I really need some help from someone? I literally bought a scoobey last night and was driving it fine on test drive etc. then when i got home and took it out, it just conked out on me!! It made a strange ddddrrrr noise and cut out. I have a signam alaram and immobiler on it and dont know whether this might bbe the cause of it. The car now tries to tick over but cannot. It's almost like something is missing or not clicking to make the initial connection to the engine.
Would anyone have any clues as to why it is not starting??
PLEASE help!!!

Might be a guess but i had a similar problem on mine. Check the battery, it could be that its not holding charge.
Mine did the same and it was just a case of changing the battery, however get the rac or someone to check this for you first.

Unlikely to be battery causing it to cut out whilst driving, alternator would have been supplying power then. Did it misfire and cut out whilst you were actually driving, or stall at a junction etc. Maybe you could explain the noise a little more, was it a quiet electrical type buzz, a misfire/backfire type noise or more of a mechanical internal engine type noise ?
It's probably a sigma alarm/imobiliser. You seem to be drawn to that as the cause, did the previous owner mention this at all ?

Hi Gemma, welcome to SNet
Sounds electrical but it's hard to diagnose via t'internet. Get it to a specialist and I'm sure they'll be able to sort it out.
Now on to more important things, are you:
a) Single (though not necessarily an issue )
b) Sexy

Well the noise was almost like a computer closing down kind of thing but alot louder!?It stopped whilst i was actually driving, but where i was driving there were bumps, might have been a loose connection on the wires or something?
I am soo puzzled and gutted, i just wanted to get out there and drive it?!!?!?

If it felt bumpy with subaru suspension it was probably just a normal road lol.
I think your theory about the loose wire may be correct. From what you describe it sounds electrical - but could also be the fuel pump end. Have you a local subaru owners club in your area. There's often a techie in the club who can have a look for you - electrics and esp immobilisers can be a bit of a black art to those not in the know. Should be fairly easy for someone a bit techie to tell if there's anything happening at the coil packs etc.
BTW : if you want to get rid of coffin dodger just post with some speeling mustikes nd sum bad gramma init.

Had a similar problem with my car..the previous owner had fitted the battery without the clamp that holds it in place, so the battery was moving around as I was driving and stretching the leads back and forth, causing the car so cut out.
One battery clamp later and all was well

Head gasket is not uncommon, but it doesn't normally just 'go' for no reason. Usually its due to overheating, or a series of running too hot. If it didnt overheat whilst you've been driving then I'd be thinking that you bought it like that. I'm surprised they can tell which side has gone without getting the engine apart, how did they diagnose that.
It's an engine out I'm afraid and replace both sides 400+ for labour.
That wouldn't usually cause the car to just cut out whilst driving or fail to start ?
