thrust bearing signs?
looks like my subaru has developed a rattle, it doesnt do it til its in gear and its getting worse so i spose its either the clutch thrust bearing or a gearbox bearing, is either of these common problems? its done 90k just had the cambelt done, oil change & filter.
any ideas? thanks, Jim.

Hi Jim,
I find the easiest way to check the thrust/release bearing is by:
1. Start engine (& just sit there idling in neutral)
2. Listen for that grinding noise which should be there from the start - if it is there, then depress clutch pedal. If the noise goes away then yes it has always been the release bearing for me that's gone
If the noise is not there from start up then it's not the release bearing in my experience (possibly gearbox as you did mention it had to be in gear).
I've personally mullered 2 gearboxes & 5 clutches & diagnosed quite a few others in my lifetime (on cars other than Subarus) but I do recognise the usual sounds & characteristic differences between gbox bearings, release bearings & slipping.
Hope this helps a little until the cavalry arrives with their expertise

Thanks cushti,
The noise doesnt come until its in gear, then it stays weather the clutch is in or out, i took it back to the garage i bought it from and they have there technitians looking at it monday, funnily the noise had quietened down when the engine was really warm.
typical, anyway ill post when i know more.

Are you sure the noise isn't coming from the engine? They have just done the cambelt so the garage could start by checking they got the timing right.
But it doesn't sound engine related anyway as you say the noise only comes when the gearbox is engaged (if the timing was out any noise would be there the whole time I believe).
