Unhappy Rattle - heat sheild thrust bearing gear box ?

Recently seem to have developed a rattle 97 Classic 125k miles

Noticable mostly in 3rd & 4th when at low revs but high load.

It's not noticable when reving engine out of gear and it clears when revs climb over about 2500.

I think it might be heat sheild - but its a different tone (lower) to previous noises from that. Also I've got it into my head its coming from the centre of engine bay rather than turbo side.

I know these things are a nightmare to diagnose like this but any thoughts / experience of gearbox / thrust bearing issues would be nice at least if only to rule them out.

No other simptoms at the moment, so seems healthy enough, just worried its indicative of a bigger problem than heat sheild.

l had a thrust bearing go on a Fiat, in neutral with the engine idling l had a high pitched noise as soon as l depressed the clutch the noise stopped, another symptom was difficulty finding a gear, sounds more like a rattle?
