Remapping V Chipping V Prodrive kit
Hi Guys
I have been reading a thread from Claire in Runcorn about BHP increases.
Mine is still under warranty, but to be honest I can't afford £1800 at the mo. So is it worth waiting and getting a remap, when it is 3 years old. My mate has just had his car chipped for £350 locally - couldn't I do that?
And why do you need to get the exhaust done?
Finally can you get "soft" brake pads to enhance braking rather than getting Brembo brakes fitted.
By the way I live near Chester, so any locals give me a wave.

To get the best advice, you'll need to say exactly what car, model and year, you have. Power gains will be dependant on the starting place
I can give you my two penn'orth, gleaned from many years Scooby ownership and listening to those "in the know" on here.
PPP: Good power gains, at a highish cost, but warranty remains and there are VERY few drawbacks. Adds to vehicle resale value.
Remapping: CAN be cheaper, but depends on who does the work, and tbh, so will the results. Some mappers are WELL trusted and the cars they map go on and on. Some are not so clever and cars have been known to expire.........You pays your money. If you decide to go this route, a search or a few questions on here will find the best mapper for your car. Then it's a case of booking and waiting, as the best are all fully booked I waited 3 months to have mine done by Bob Rawle, for example.
Remapping CAN detract from vehicle resale value.
Chipping: Depends what you mean by chipping, but in general that's a big
Chips tend to fool the engine, rather than apply a remap. This can lead to all sorts of problems, the most likely being under fuelling, with the resultant melting of pistons due to weak mixture. IMHO, to be avoided, but it's your car............
I wouldn't buy a chipped car, nor even one that had BEEN chipped and had had it removed.
Do you need mods before a remap? Depends. Do you want the remap to release ALL the power available? A decent exhaust will help the engine breathe better allowing a better map. No, you don't have to, but then you can't expect as much from any remap. Even the PPP has new parts to help the map.
I can virtually guarantee that if you DON'T get new parts before a map, you'll want them after, then have to pay for a re-remap
What mods should you have? How long is a piece of string?
Can't really give any opinion on brakes, mine are fine with Godspeed Brembos on a classic making 300+bhp.

Alcazar has covered most of your questions very well. In answer to the one above: turbos are driven by exhaust gasses, which means the speed at which they get through the exhaust system is critical in determining performance. The Std exhust on a WRX has 3 cats and is very restrictive, meaning loss of low down pull, increase in spool threshold and response from the turbo. The net result is significantly less power. You only really need a cat in the down pipe to pass an MOT and you can get a sports cat one that is MUCH less restrictive than the std item.
The next step is to tell the ECU about the exhaust changes with a remap. A WRX with a decent exhaust system (H&S and Revolution are two good examples) and a remap by an expert will produce 270-280bhp and similar torque.

I have a 55 plate std WRX - It is an import if that makes any odds.
So I need a new exhaust, then a remap? Simon from Jolly Green Monster has contacted me on messages and it looks like I could remap it for £300 ish - what exhaust would you recommend and how much are they?

Re-mapping
This thread has got me thinking,ive got a MY99 with ninja sports cat downpipe, ninja centre section and a hayward and scott back box.The difference is night and day.My next step is a remap but Im concerned the remap affects reliability,in your opinion does it?

I work in Northwich and have been using the local one there - Christopher Neill. I live just over the border from Chester in North Wales. There used to be 1 literally a quarter of a mile down the road, but it's changed to a Alpha Romeo one now!

Just ordered my PPP for the 11th April for £995, so thank you Phil for the advice.
Do they tell you what they actually managed to increase it too, or do you need to do a rolling road before and after for that?
