Default What gearbox @ 380bhp?

On a classic 93 wrx, what would be a best suited gearbox? I would of though a sti v5 one? A six speeder sti is kinda expensive

Could the sti 5 one with stand 400bhp?

Wrong question!

You need to know what torque you have.
I feel a V5 will take about 380 lbft with reasonable care.
Smash the gear lever too much and it will pop.

a 6 speeder will take alot more and imho is a very good way to get a good strong box.
About £2000 will do a 6 speeder
A similar strength 5 speeder will be about £3000 but far less work and weight.

More recently people are saying to replace the gears inside with stronger versions instead of replacing the whole box...dont know if its a cheaper option?

did ask around, your looking at £800-£1k. You can get a used sti5 box + diff for £500-700.

A STI 5 box is supposed to be a bit stronger than a UK box but with a real 380 lbft then I don't think it will last long when driven properly.

I hope you are not right Floyd as I've just fitted the V5 to my 370 lbft Sti with 8.5'' hillclimb slicks on each corner.
Could be a ppg around the corner soon?

Who want to fit a gearbox and still have to worry if it will cope?

Do it properly and whack a PPG in it

Yeah, have to agree with that. No point spending time and money getting a replacement that you're only going to worry about. Get it done right first time and save yourself time and money.

Impressed that Graham's box has lasted under competition conditions with that torque: good mapping, skillful driving and a pinch of luck I suspect

As Bob'5 said the other day, I am a 'mature' driver.
Maybe I just take it too easy?

David has suggested he can do a ppg for a good price, maybe i should find out what that means!

It's only money/holiday/new car for the Wife/Daughter's wedding/my divorce.
