Default Has the dealer over filled my oil?

I had the car serviced on Thursday and supplied the dealer 5 litres of Mobil 1. I warned them not to overfill it because it was 5l instead of the usual 4l container.

I checked my oil today with the engine cold and I'm sure they've over filled it. I'm sure I read a thread that said filling to the upper level is too much. There's a picture link below where you can see the cold oil level is between the upper level and the notch. Can someone tell me if I need to take it back and get some oil drained?

Cheers

It is overfilled by the max 'hole' yes, but I ain't sure what that would mean engine wise?
I know when mine was topped up last year, when Matt Clark showed me the dipstick my oil level was slightly below the MAX 'hole' and he said this is recommended. But again, I have no idea what overfilling does myself.
Suffice to say, the MAX hole is for cold checking, and the notch is for hot checking.

Is there a chance that too much oil would cause it to surge up inside the engine on hard cornering and then hit the crank?

Hi, Look at both sides of the stick. as the way the stick goes into the sump can catch teh oil.

overfilling can lead to more crankcase pressure which in turn can lead to excess oil mist in your beather system, which inturn can lead to execess oil in the MAF (theres a breather into the inlet pipework

oil on the MAF can lead to its premature failure

i am lead to believe that this can lead to sum quite serious issues, imho i would drain sufficient oil to take the oil just under the top hole on the dipstick.

It took half a dozen readings before getting a consistant one. I'll check it again with the engine hot and see if it goes past the top notch. If it's past that, I'll take it back.

Mike Wood, if you read this what are your thoughts?

Cheers

It always looks different to me as well. the only good advice is to take out the dipstick and leave it out 5 mins to let the oil drain back down the dipstick tube and then try again.
Or do what i do, check it at least 6 times and stand there swearing as it still reads different every time, then walk away and say f**k it! LOL.

I took an engine hot reading after driving to work this morning. Left the dipstick out and let the oil settle for 15 minutes. The reading looks exactly the same as the cold reading!? So either my oil isn't expanding (ignoring the laws of physics), or I've not left it long enough to stand. But if I leave it any longer, the oil will cool and it won't be a hot reading any more!

I'll take another reading before I leave work with oil cool and see what I get.

Excess oil can clog up the boost control soloniod and cause boost issues.

Best check it cold on a level surface Also put the dipstick in the right way round (oil can symbol the right way up) and read from the side with the letters stamped in.

Every service I have had from competant subaru specialists (ie. Not main dealers) have filled the oil somewhere between half way and full on the dipstick at cold.

I spoke with the dealer about the oil and they said they would take some out if it had been over filled. I took the car in last week, but when they showed me a dip stick reading just over maximum (with engine hot), I was happy enough that the oil was ok. Felt a t1t for complaining in the first place, but better safe than sorry.

Cheers

AFAIK its 4.5ltrs in the engine and .5ltrs in the oil filter = 5ltrs.
