Exclamation Please Help!!! Massive problem with WRX STI

Yesterday travelling up the motorway on way home, I went from 3rd to 2nd to over-take two 40 ft trucks when I heard a 'POP'!! The engine went dead and I had to free wheel back into slow lane and into hard shoulder... I tried starting scooby again and it just turned over... It sounded like it wanted to start, but nothing!! Took it to the closest garage (towed by a Punto!!) and his diagnostics machine hadn't got the software for my scooby... He reckons it's not an engine problem but without having it checked on the diagnostic machine, he can't tell me what it could be instead!!!

Can anyone help?? Has this ever happened to anyone??

Sorry, but I'm a complete novice when it comes to scooby's.... Only have it 5 weeks.... I'll have to check with mechanic? any other ideas as mechanic is as clueless as me... Or can anyone recommend a Subaru specialist in Dublin, Ireland?
