Standard turbo on wagon?

Wagons are complicated, early japanese WRX's had TD04's, early UK turbo's had TD05's and as far as I can tell sti1 and sti2 wagons had TD05's. I think this applies to all pre facelift classic wagons.

A Z4 is a waste of time and money anyway. I went there and did it myself, bought a Z5 (Z4 with a 8k redline, only bought it because I could not find a Z4 at the time). You are far better off with a scoobyecu or ESL chip, its a modified Z4 map which is tuned to run higher boost and adjust all the neccesary things accordingly. You can get scoobyecu's and ESL chips for TD04 impreza's, I think they raise boost to 1 bar, should be enough with a decat and decent panel filter to see you pat 270bhp.
I have an early WRX wagon, the turbo was very noisey on it so I decided to replace it with a TD05, poped it in with a Z5. up the rev range power was much improved but took noticably longer to spool up. Then added an ESL chip which helped boost power further. Not content with this I changed the injectors and added a FMIC, added a modified ESL chip and put my own boost controller in, it now pulls very well at about 1.2 bar, especially noticable in 4th and 5th where it was lacking a bit before. I estimate it at around 300bhp.
However, my clutch now slips on hard launches and the spool up now is way off what the old td04 was. If I was doing things again I'd just stick with the TD04 and ESL chip and enjoy the car.

Thanks for the info.
It's imported from Italy, so I guess it's simular to the UK ones. But not an STI.
Where do I get my hands on a premapped ESL chip?

They sell on ebay mainly, link on that website - should cost about £195 as I recall. Make sure you tell them your model though when you order so you get the correct map. Should really be used with a decat and good panel filter to get the most out of it.

for the effort, cost and work you need to get 300bhp + from an td04, you would definately be better off doing an td05 conversion unless you really dont want to lose the quicker spool up of the 04

Yes All UK wagons pre facelift had TD05's, All jdm WRX's before this had TD04's, JDM STi's before this seem to have had TD05's fitted but there is so much hearsay around about the sti wagons (mainly because there are bugger all of them around) that I can't be sure that they were all fitted with TD05's. I know that some sti wagons actually had Z4 ECU's.
This information is only true for wagons, saloons had TD05's for UK and jdm as far as I know, not sure about the sti's.
