you would have lower intake temps. more power maybe possible if you went and had a remap but id do other mods before splashing out on a remap, decat for one...

The STI TMIC does give a slightly better flow, I strees only SLIGHTLY. What did make the STI TMIC flow better was the STI intercooler pipework. No point having one without the other and vice versa. Bear in mind that even with both parts fitted to your WRX you probably will not fill any difference because the gains in air flow are so small. If you compare the WRX and the STI pipework you will see what I mean.
If you search there is a cracking thread on this subject. On there you will find a link to a page where a study of all Subaru Intercoolers was carried out. Some were better than others, marginally, even after market high cc intercoolers were not much good. It was concluded, for the best gains from the TMIC that good free flowing pipework to your IC is a must and without it you are basically flogging a dead horse.

As above. In general it's the better STi Y-pipe that makes the difference on classics, not the intercooler itself. The classic WRX/Turbo 2000 Y-pipe underneath is an absolutely shocking design, even though the intercoooler core is the same as the STi.

If you went to all that trouble, expense and fitted an FMIC then didn't get a map then whats the point?
If more power from a near standard car is what you are after then before I fitted a new IC I would just make sure the fins on your standard one are nice and straight and just go for a new map. As you say a standard pre 96 ECU cannot be mapped, you would have to fit something like a ESL chip or fit a mappable ECU. ESL or simalar chip about £200, new ECU maybe £300 plus a remap but more versatile if you do decide to go for huge BHP. You would only need to go to a FMIC if you were thinking of running BHP's in the 300's and you'd deffo need a remap for that.
