crank numbers
what are the numbers on the end of the crank shaft, there are two cranks in the picture, how can i tell who made them and what engine they are for, is one for an sti, by the way the dirty one is higher as the flywheel bolts are still in it.

The A's, and B's refer to the mains journal sizing, as they are graded at the factory, and I think the numbers, or letters to the right refer to the grade of big ends.
However, you can't buy "graded" bearings, so the best you can do when building the engine, is "plastigauge" everything, to make sure it's within spec'.
It's the same as A, & B grade pistons.
Mark.

here they are what is what,
if you look closely the dirty ones top and bottom sections are slightly offset to the rest, that is differant to the clean one, they are all in line, would the clean crank be ok in a closed dec sti v1 block bored out for over sized subaru forged pistons, this is the block,
and these are the pistons + conrods.

The Shiny one is a later, modified crank with 4 oil drillings in the Mains from what i can make out from the pics.
As long as the Thrust is in the center on the crank, you will be ok fitting it with the rods and pistons (fit it into one half of the block with the main bearing shells to make sure if fits - you will soon tell).
The only other thing to watch out for is a 2.5 litre Crank - the Stroke is 79mm as opposed to 75mm on the 2.0 litre - you will end up with the Pistons poking their heads out of the top of the Bores

you have been busy havent you mick, thanks very much again, i got the crank off an engine with them pistons in so would think they are matched, the only thing that bothers me is the in top picture looking down at the two cranks, the dirty one isnt as in line as the clean one, you can see the two inner sections are slightly sticking out more, why is this?
