it is not a difficult job.. just methodical removal of items etc.. to allow either the box to be dropped out or lift the engine out. . given access to an engine crane I prefer to remove the engine than drop the box but then I can then do it on my own rather than have a mate drink my beer fridge and get in the way..
from memory..
remove air box.. as sport.. would be intercooler on turbo.
remove starter motor
undo the bolts and nuts around the bell housing..
remove slave clutch cylinder
remove the cap covering the clutch fork pivot with a 10mm allen key
use a small long bolt to screw in to the pivot and pull it out (cambelt cover bolts are the correct size)..
If dropping the box..
drain the gearbox oil
remove exhaust
remove prop - prop support bearing carrier, undo flexi joint under the cover near rear diff, pull towards back of car and out of the box.
remove the front driveshafts.. small pin in each inner cv.. drop one hub connection etc to allow enough movement to drop one shaft off the box..
move box over to drop the other off, may need to undo craddle bolts first..
support gearbox with jack
undo gear linkage
undo gearbox craddle bolts
drop box back and down off the engine..
if removing the engine..
remove exhaust..
remove radiator
remove fuel lines
undo the engine mounts underneath on the subframe
undo the engine loom behind battery..
hoist away..
unbolt the clutch pressure plate.. fit and align new clutch
Good days work.. especially the first time.

iv done mine both ways and agree with jolly green monster 100 times easier taking engine out then you dont have to lie under car getting a bad back.
simple mate if you got the right tolls but don't try it if you aint you just start wishing you paid a garage.

Box out everytime for me , easy job about 4hrs ! sod removing the engine just to do a clutch , but everyones different ! i had a ring around the subaru specialists asking which way they do it as i needed to do mine and they all said box out everytime and why would you need to remove the engine to do a clutch , so i said ok fine and done it !

did mine last weekend, first time for me and my m8. replaced fly wheel at same time, just took box out, no hardship really, took us all day, but we did phook about a bit, wouldnt dream of taking engine out and if a garage suggests otherwise, they are having peeps eyes out - thieving c*nts.

as said if you have a lift, ie. in a garage and a tranmission jack then it is easier to remove the box obviously. if you are on your driveway on axle stands having done it both ways a few times it is quicker for me personally and less hassle to do the engine out
