Default Really REALLY bad misfire under hard boost

Okay here goes, sorry for the length of the post but PLEASE PLEASE read it.

Yesterday my car (MY99 UK Turbo) went to API for a VF29 fitting and Remap by Pat Herborn (sorry if I've spelt your Surname wrong).

They did a brilliant job (Nathan you star), but when it came to mapping the car, when they went above 1bar of boost the car misfired VERY badly over and over again.

Pat seemed to think it was an electrical fault and could pick up no other problems through his laptop so......

The car came back and they replaced:

Plugs (7's)
Leads
Coil pack

Also Checked:

Fuel pressure
Made sure there was proper earting points (added 3 more)

When the engine was cold the turbo ran for one run at 1.41bar in third gear with no problems at all.

However once the engine was hot above 1bar there was the major misfire again, so bad that David had to back off for fear of breaking the propshaft.

Pat held the boost back to 1bar so that we all could go home, this was at 7pm and API had been closed from 5pm!!!!

Has anyone had the same problem or any ideas what the problem is before we get it on a Dyno for further investigation?

I would like to say thanks to Nathan, David and Pat for going above and beyond the call of duty to try to find out the cause of the misfire.

It's very easy to praise a company when things go right, but you soon find out who truely gives good customer service when things go wrong. David stuck to his word on price even though the workshop stayed open 2 hours after closing time

Spec is:

VF29
STI 8 intercooler
Walbro fuel pump
3 inch decat (wrapped and sprayed)
Simota Panel filter
3 port boost solenoid
Full induction hoses from airbox to turbo
MAF replaced 6 months ago

Any help will be much appreciated.

Damo

Absolutely right mate, we all were for about 2 hours, he is going to get it on a dyno to try to get to the bottom of it.

David suggested posting on here to see if anyone has had the problem.

It was as if the car was just holding up two fingers to the boost with no obvious signs of why.

Could be, does "hunt" a bit at idle every now and then, I'll let them know.

Anyone else got any ideas?

Crank position sensor?

sticky boost solenoid. It will be working harder at higher boost so may be sticking shut which will cause boost to suddenly hit 0.7bar, although saying that this could of been picked up when logging boost.

Boost solenoid was fitted yesterday.....however it was second hand.

Anyone else?

Need as many avenues as possible for when we get it on the dyno.

Boost or fuel cut (what ecu?) or spark gap too far apart ?

mark,
API changed the plugs straight away yesterday for some colder ones, it did help a bit.

Would the Cam sensor show up on Pat's laptop or show an error code? Or is it something you can't really "see"?

The sensors helped.

I earthed the inlet manifold and that really helped

Fixed the problem finally....

The plugs were gapped to 0.8mm I have now gapped them to 0.7mm and the misfire has completely gone away

Just found this thread, I had missfire probs on mine under hard acceleration and found that 2 of the 4 plugs were shot, changed all 4 and we were back in business.

But you seem to have found and resolved the problem.
