road re-map
first of all sorry for another re-map question
i will be having my car remapped over the the next month or so, it will be mapped on the road, i have looked through some old threads saying you need to do full throttle runs in 3rd 4th and 5th which is all good just not down normal roads does it really need to be done like this as i drive petrol tankers for a living and if i lose my license i lose my job, the person i will hopefully be using maps on the road so just wondering really can it be done at slower speeds and still be quick when i need it and importantly reliable
thanks in advance

4th is probably used the most during mapping on the road, you get a fair idea of things in 4th then grab 5th only if possible.
5th tends to be only used when pulling from 2,500rpm upto full boost then hold it flat to the floor for as long as you dare.
When mapping on a rolling road they tend to only use 4th.
Any good mapper will leave a bit of headroom in the map to cater for this.

Why not have a mate that goes up the road first in his car and calls you to say the coast is clear, that way you know there are no police or camera,s about?

if you have any fears about this 'type' of driving then simply don't do it , my mapper has been known to do the driving at the same time of mapping with the customer sat next to him holding the lap-top
or just get it done elsewhere on the rollers.

most mappers are sympathetic to the owner.. some owners enjoy and want to go fast and enjoy the experiance, and you have to slow the owner down.. others don't and dread it.. you can as said do most of the mapping in 4th or even 3rd and compensate for the higher gears but there are key points that need checking but there is no need for a flat out run or anything that bad.

Just a thought though guys....
If you are worried about the possible speeds involved whilst mapping, and the possibility of losing your license....Then why bother having your car re-mapped for more power/speed...
Unless of course you intend on driving the car on track/dragstrip only..
On a more serious note, depending on who you use to map your car, you may be as well finding a suitable stretch of road, ie, motorway link road, bit of dual carriageway, approx 1-2 miles long, where there are no slip roads or laybys or junctions, and where you can turn around at either end (roundabout) and just keep going back and forth up the same stretch of road.
This way you get to be reasonably sure of the road situation, keep an eye out for the ol'bill, and be safe-ish that no slow-mo driver's gonna pull out into your path whilst you are concentrating on doing what the mapper asks of you..

i want to get it mapped cause it is decatted so want the correct fuelling and ignition and to pull harder under acceleration i have a couple of roads like that near me so they could be the ones to use,

Daniel,
You needn't worry. Good mappers neither want nor like any daft stuff! 4th gear is usually used on a nice open dual carriageway. You'll be asked to hold the car at different levels of boost (as indicated on a boost guage) and then some brief WOT runs and some progressive application of the loud pedal tests to assess throttle response. If done properly it's all very calm, systematic and not very stressful. Traffic always comes first and the mapper will tell you this.
You'll most likely enjoy it!!

Just for reference, my car was mapped by Andy F. My runs were always 3,000 rpm to 6,000 rpm in 3rd on a dual carriageway. He gave me the choice of 3rd or 4th. I reckoned most of my overtaking is in 3rd, so went for that! Probably totally irrelevant to the mapping though
As NS04 says, there are some runs through 2nd, 3rd and 4th toward the end of the session, but always in a "safe" environment.
