Default are these speeds right? or something wrong?

Hi al.. just got in.. was having a laugh down the dual cariage way on way home with a R6 motobike. just wondering if my top end speeds are right or something wrong. at 120mph the cars at 6000 rpm.. is this about right? just my last car was a nissan 200sx and at 6000rpm it would be doing around 150mph.. let me know if you have any ideas.. i just expected more from my scooby.. its a 1994 wrx import with exhaust system and dump valve.

If you have or can borrow a friends sat nav it should tell you your current speed so you can compare it to your speedo reading.

I may be wrong but I also think the imports have a closer gear ratio and so a slower top speed ... but I'm sure someone will be along and confirm this as a fact or not.

Does your import have a speedo convertor? I'm not sure how accurate these are.

Also, does it have standard size wheels and tyres? if the rolling circumference is not as per the designed spec the speedo will not be accurate ... but saying that most people go for larger wheels and tyres (therefore usually a larger circumference) which in turn should mean you get a faster top speed per gear but slower acceleration.

Anyway just some thoughts.

What has power got to do with it.

Surely in the same gear, 300BHP will do exactly the same speed as 500BHP at a given RPM

The Jap WRX has a short ratio box. In fact, early ones have boxes that are similar to later RA boxes i.e. very short.

Yep, absolutely.

If 120 was on the speedo and the revs were spot on, I'd wager you have a RA gearbox

Using this

The SPDA - Transmission Chart

the WRX 94 does seem to have a short ratio gearbox, however I don't know how to work these out into speeds.

Depends on what you mean by faster,

Faster top speed would be to change the gear box to a longer ratio or uprate the engine so that you can raise the rev limit or both.

Faster acceleration would be to tune the engine for more power, but I don't really know much about the Scoobyecu, I think Scoobyclinic does them.

What mods do you have at the moment?

yip sounds like you got an RA gearbox mate mines will top out at 122mph

iff you go to Welcome to Type-RA.co.uk - Home of the Subaru Impreza WRX Type RA, Impreza WRX STi Type RA, Impreza Type RA V Limited, Scooby V. Ltd there are a couple off guys that have put a longer 5th gear into the box for motoway driving ect.

my 95 WRX is geared at about 20.5mph/1000rpm
so 6k = 123mph

IIRC the older WRX's had a top speed of 144mph, but with speedo inaccuracy it would probably read 150mph. As said above is about 20mph -22mph per 1000rpm in 5th so if you had gone the extra 1k rpm it would have been the 144mph top end.

The really short ratio boxes top out at 130mph, not sure which models had these tho but i think it was either type R's or RA's?

id say ra box too ! that r6 must of had thousands spent on it to do 170mph ! either that or his speedo is wrong too ! i done an r6 which was flat out at 156 on my fireblade , in france on the autoroute and i topped 174mph on that ! but thats what happens when 15 superbikes cain it to the south of france in a day ! never again !

thats why i brought a scoob for the power and noise but it will never beat the rush of opening the throttle on a superbike and going from 70 to 130 in seconds ! gave biking up due to havin a daughter and bloody miss it ! i just let the bikes past and dont even bother trying as there to quick but its good to have a burn up with anything though , bike or car especialy the boys in there 1litre shopping trolleys trying to burn you up ! does make me smile

My RA gear box would be practically redlining at 7000 rpm to hit 120mph. If you got to 120mph at 6000rpm . It dosent sound to me like u have an RA gearbox. However i may be wrong but i'm just speaking from my experience. You should know if u have an RA gear box as they are ballastic off the mark and rapid through all the lower gears.
