Default whining noise 2950rpm 60mph in 5th

I seem to be getting a whining noise/droning noise when crusing at just below 3000rpm - really noticable at about 60mph in 5th. I drive an 02wrx ppp - has anyone else noticed this from thir cars?

I can remember reading something about this in a previous thread but cant seem to find it - any ideas would be great.

Cheers. Nick

Default whining noise

where abouts is the noise coming from?
i get a bit of a whining noise when sitting at steady 60 on my 53 wrx it appears to be coming from rear and goes if i just lightly accelerate i think it might be slight exhaust noise but cannot be sure

My 05 WRX does the same at 60mph. I think it is a harmonic noise from the rear diff/carrier. I don't know if there is a fix, maybe different mountings would cure it?

Thanks for the replies, it sounds like its coming from the engine / front somewhere . I'll have another listen tommorow with the window down and see if i can pin-point it - if it is the rear diff, it sounds like it could be a common problem?

Could it be the waste gate just opening slightly?? Like blowing over the top of a bottle kinda sound. Seems like the right kinda rev range.

Chad.

this sounds like the 64 mph noise that the blobeye's suffer from. there is no known fix as the dealers cannot identify where the noise is generated

Looks like it may be the rear diff, had the window down this morning, battling the rain and sounds like its coming from the back. Can be offputting though especially when your cruising in a 60 limit at 60.

sounds loudest off throttle, then most likely it. Subaru has a fix for it here but not sure about UK. The entire diff is replaced under warranty, known problem
