Default Front pipe change a bad thing?

Folks,

I've got a 2003 JDM STi and am looking to change something on the exhaust side to try and get a little bit more noise from it.

Some people have advised just changing the backbox and some have suggested going for a new front pipe. When I mentioned the front pipe idea to the parts guy at the local Subaru garage he said that it was a no no due to high boost levels causing damage?

Is this really the case? The car is completely standard and run on BP Ultimate without fail (it's the only high octane readily available here in NZ). I don't plan on doing anything else to the car, would like to avoid getting it remapped and only really want to get a little bit more noise from it. However if changing the front pipe also gave a little more (safe) power then cool(!!!!!)

Does anyone have any advice?

Mike

removing the front (up) pipe may cause over boost which, without remap wouldne be the best idea.

just get the backbox, thatll change the noise!

Cheers guys, I've been getting so many different opinions from people that I thought I better check with the experts on Scoobynet before doing anything!

I've got someone phoning me back with backbox options tomorrow morning!

Any suggestions on the optimium diameter outlet? (for want of a better word!)

a decent size is 4" outlet. not too big and not too small. 2.5" is the exhaust bore size.

If you want to remain standard looking another cheaper option is to remove the resonator, by replacing the pipe with a non - resonated pipe. this is trhe pipe that the back box bolts on to. They normally work out to around £100.
