couple of Q
Hello, got a couple of questions, im new to the scooby world and have a my97 uk impreza turbo, firstly i have a sort of dry tapping noise around my engine bay on drivers side any ideas on that? secondly my oil level is slightly high is that bad? thirdly i went for a nice drive today to blow out cobwebs which i do now and then and give it a little thrashing and car struggled to get to 60mph in 2nd gear where as a few weeks ago it did it with ease, any idea why its struggling? its got to 60 last few times i have done it, only gets a thrashing once a month the rest of time im sensible with her

Hi,
The tapping noise will likely be the boost solenoid, attached to the strut. If you start it up and go under the bonnet, just open the throttle slightly with your hand and you will hear it start to tap away. If it taps while ticking over then your throttle position sensor needs adjusted.
If your oil is too high it can get into the boost pipes and block them preventing the boost solenoid working properly. Take them off and clean them out with carb/brake cleaner, i would also do the same with the solenoid.
Ideally you need to get some oil out of it, most ppl recommend that you run about half way on the dipstick...

Hi,
Ideally you want a digital multimeter to check the voltages 0.3 to 0.5 idle i think and 5.3 to 5.5 on full throttle, obviously when the engine is off!!
The way i did it was remove the intercooler and get a pair of long nose mole grips, the screws are in a difficult place. On the side of the throttle body opposite the throttle cable theres a sensor with a screw on top and bottom. Loosen the screws enough to turn the sensor. If you have a multimeter you can turn the sensor with the ignition on and check the voltages. If not you will have to refit the intercooler, start the car and turn it either way until the ticking stops, then remove the intercooler and tighten the screws.
You will need to reset the ecu likely as mine threw up a code due to the voltages changing.

Just an update, the tapping noise and smell of petrol on offside was due to a spark plug left loose which was done by previous owner so noise and petrol smell now gone and power and fuel eff is now good and 60mph in 2nd gear is now back as it should be too, result!!!
