The digits have probably become loose and are not clicking into each other.
My old 93 WRX done this.
When I bought it the garage had adjusted the mileage to read the correct Miles instead of KM. But the circlip wasn't in tight.
When I then done a 700 mile trip to the lake district it actually went back about 50 miles.
I poped the dash pod out and sorted it easy enough though.....
