Default 2.5 Build Questions

After reading the posts about engine builds, I have decided to go for a 2.5 bottom end.

I have so far:

2.5 block

2.5 crank

New light flywheel

I will be going for some Wiseco pistons as the block is needing an overbore anyway. My main question is, how good are the stock 2.5 EJ25 rods? I will be aiming for a reliable and unstressed engine, so aiming for 400bhp at the max as I want a car thats more responsive than high power.

I presume I will need to use 2.5 headgaskets, and would like to use ARP headstuds. What else would be worth doing whilst the engine is getting rebuilt and swapped?

Sorry about all the probably daft questions but I'm still a bit new to Scoobs

Kris

Firstly, apologies for not getting back to you about your block, but as you may have seen, i got another EJ257, but thanks for the pics.

Speak to Mark at Later Performance about pistons and rods for the motor.

Also consider an uprated oil pump.

EJ25 or EJ257? EJ25 only came NA, and there are differences depending on model year.

EJ25, open deck block. Does this mean the block I have isn't compatible to be used for a turbo setup?

Yeah I've heard an uprated oil pump is a must on any engine so that shall be on the list.

I know there is a couple of different sizes of head studs, any size to avoid or preferable?

Going by the casting on the side of the block, I would say its an EJ25. I know some of the 2.5s can be semi closed/open, and mine is an open deck block.

What makes you ask? Am I missing something?

If you're going to be happy with circa 400bhp, the older normally aspirated block should be fine, but you will need to know if it is a phase one, or phase two block, so you get the right rods, & bearings.

Have a look, and see if it's a centre, or end thrust crank. Hopefully it's an end thrust phase two, which will make life much easier for you.

Hi Mark yeah I'm only aiming for about 350bhp as I want a daily driver thats gonna be easy to drive and pretty responsive.

What is the easiest way to check the phase of the engine? (not sure what you mean by "if it's a centre, or end thrust crank")

Much is a turbo 2.5 block? Would I be better off getting one for durability? Don't have a grand to spend just on the block unfortunately

Kris,

Picture shows the two positions (this particular block has both) and how the block has been machined to take the thrust bearing, which sits over the web like a saddle.

Cheers *smiles* I've been keeping an eye on that thread for a while now! Its a cracking read with some very good info!

LateralPerformance, after looking at the block tonight I noticed it doesn't have the bit for the centre bearing, so is this a good thing or a bad?

It's good, because you can fit the later EJ257 STi crank
