Have it on my downpipe. I'd also read about cracking pipes, but I've had no problems in over 6 months of using it. Not sure if it's worth it, but the DEI heat wrap I used cost me £50 for a 50ft roll (of which I needed about 2/3rd's).

ive got about 25 feet of the stuff good kit to, yours for 20 notes plus a fiver p+P wrapped my down pipe with it , double wrapped it kept heat down , right down , also keeps heat away from master cylinder, so breakes dont soften up quite as quick, pm if you want it, or its going on my evo...

the downpipe and uppipe have heat shields as standard and I don't think Subaru fitted them for show so what do you think would be preferable.

In short, yes wrap the downpipe. (and up-pipe if fitting), I would assume that good quality components should not crack at the high temps.

Once you've wrapped your pipes spray them with high temp paint and this will stop any water soaking in further down your downpipe.

Being aware of cracking pipes is a general caution if wrapping iron manifolds, however loads of people have wrapped the OE manifold without problems so I wouldn't worry about it too much

Double wrapping should be avoided as TOO much heat is retained. This leads to embrittlement of the headers, if stainless steel, over a period of time and subsequent cracking.
I used to use the sealing paint spray but came to the conclusion that it helped the wrap to go brittle and flake off.
