Default STI 1 Starting problem

I have a version 1 STI. Shes a poor starter some days.
Theres plenty life in her when I crank her over but shes not keen to start.
The CEL light comes on, as do the fans and she takes a good wind over before she splutters into life.
Other days she starts first turn of the key.

Was advised that it could be the coolant temp sensor located on the pipe work under the inlet manifold running from the top hose thats throwing it out.

Can anyone confirm this or are there any other ideas.

Thanks in advance

Does the idle vary when warmed up as i had this problem on my 93wrx and it was the coolant temp sensor (didn't have a problem staring the car though).
Do a search for saxonfield on here as it tells you how to check the ecu for fault codes

with the fans coming on it does sound like the coolant sensor. Like myblackwrx says do a search for saxonfield to get the website where it gives you information on how to read the codes and reset the ecu etc.
With the fans coming on, your car thinks it is hot so therefore it is injecting less fuel into the engine than is needed

mine is slow starting ('93 wrx), if left for a week or so then it fires straight away, fans do not come on though when i put ignition on.

I did put a post about mine last week but didn't get anywhere,

my tickover does vary sometimes when warm.

(no help I know but your not alone )

Mark.

Will check the codes when I get home again and try her.

When shes hot the car runs as smooth as a new car.

I would say perhaps one in five times she has a problem starting in the mornings.

I will let you all know how I get on if I get the problem cured.

Cheers

Jamie

Iwould say 100% engine coolant sensor ! had same problem with mine , engine light comes on sometimes in morning and fans are on constant even when cold and bad starting ! £28 from subaru and a bit fiddly to change
