You cant "chip" your car, you can however replace the ecu with say an Apexi, probably one of your cheapest options, the car will then have to be remapped, note that you should be looking at upgrading things like the brakes first before even taking this route otherwise you will just end up in a hedge or brick wall due to no stopping power

The Apexi power fc is a fully remappable ecu (£700 including mapping approx)check Jolly Green Monster - ECU Mapping or Zen Performance - Performance upgrade solutions for Japanese cars or AndyForrestPerformance for info.
Brakes you can upgrade to later model impreza 4 pots (which i've done on my 93wrx) these can be bought for about £250 then you have to buy pads and discs.

Buy a replacement Z4 ecu from a 95/96 WRX. 260bhp as standard and a straight swap.
Gives an increase in boost, plus the correct fuel / ignition settings.
About £60-£80 from ebay.

You shouldn't use a Z4 ecu with the turbo in UK cars (TD04) as the import turbos are TD05.
If you stick a z4 in the car you'll likely to hit the fuel cut and overboost because of the quicker spool up of the td04.

Edit if you do get a z4 change the turbo to a td05

I had these on my MY00 PPP'd car, they still sucked really (had a 306 gti-6 before which had better 2 pot brakes than the scoobs 4 pots )
Try someone like Welcome To Godspeed Motorsport and go for a brembo 4 pot conversion (like the calipers on the fiat coupe turbo and 406 3ltr coupe) much better stopping power with a decent 305/8 mm disc setup and less than 600 quid for the kit
308mm Four Pot Conversions

you can put a ESL chip in the ecu, runs advaned ignition and increases boot to 1.1 bar? cost about £200. but the 4 pots would be first on my list!

the turbo in the all uk models upto 96 was a td05 wagon and saloon
i have a 94 uk wagon with a z4 ecu big difference on standard and a well worth mod for little money.

Turbochargers

We recommend that you choose the smallest turbo capable meeting your power requirements. This will ensure maximum response and support the widest useable power band. There are a number of different turbos fitted to the Impreza range. Ranging from the smallest very responsive Mitsubishi TD04 as fitted to MY 97 onwards UK and Euro cars including pre 96 UK wagons.
Next there is the range of IHI VF series turbos fitted to 97-00 WRX and all STI 97 onwards
Finally the Mitsubishi TD05 as fitted to most pre 97 UK, Euro and WRX saloons

Mac 2 is correct , early uk wagons come standard with td05 so you can fit a z4 ecu no problem ! the import wrx wagons came with tdo4 and thats the one you shoudnt use a z4 with! I have a 94 uk wagon with chipped ecu (v7) , td05 , tsl center decat + back box , hks induction kit and arc dump valve . am running about 14/15 psi no problems with 99tesco fuel . i would recommend a getting a z4 ecu and maybe an hks induction kit (£150) made a huge difference to my car and have had no maf problems at all . all depends on your wallet ! i would love to have an apexi but dont have £700 !

all depends how much you got too spend and how much bhp you want mate and what its going to do to your insurance:

with your current mods(centre de cat and bb) with a z4 and decent fuel(just unplug your ecu and plug the z4 in, take it easy for a tank of petrol job done)should be around 260bhp then.

if you add filter and front de cat maybe 270-280bhp

all for not much more than a couple of hundred pounds.

your car maybe limited to 112mph with a z4 though but not a problem unless you do track days, but even this can be removed.

be careful though because its easy to change the top of the ecu to a any other 4 plug so make sure its a z4 ecu inside the outer casing.

if you want more power and you have a bigger budget they there are lots of routes to take you above 300bhp.

if you go the z4 route i think youll find that standard brakes will be ok with grooved discs, decent pads, braided hoses and dot 5.1

if you are going above 260bhp i think you would need bigger brakes atleast 4 pots.

something else to think about mate.

hope this helps.

i paid £80 for my z4 off ebay, anything from £60-£100 is a fair price i think, there is also a z5 ive been told you can use as its the same as the z4 but i have no experience of these so not 100%.there is a label on the front of the ecu obviously saying z4 but there is 2 colours one blue and one black, mines the blue one so not sure about the black coloured label. best to get the blue labelled z4 unless someone tells you the difference.ive been running the z4 in my94 uk wagon for a few months and its alot better than standard you`ll feel the difference over standard.
