Default New Bottom End please...

Hi all

I have just got the call i was dreading... the results.

I had trouble recently with my Crank pulley coming loose, so i replaced it a with lightened alloy one, this also came loose...

i took it to my local dealer, and the result is a bent crank shaft leading to a bottom end rebuild. Not got full price yet but they said around £2000.

Can any one suggest a cheaper better place to get the work carried out.
another question is could i squeeze in the 2.5 lump for around the same price if so any ideas on where i could get this done?

the car is a 95 import STi2 and i am based in cambridge UK

Thanks For any help

I have not heard of crankshaft bending just at the end, what did the old pulley look like when you took it off, there is a keyway where it slips over the woodruff key on the crank, if the slot where the key fits on the crank is worn, then this will need machining.

Give Zen Performance a call, fairly local to you - for details click the top link in the Drivetrain section

the original pulley had big notch ripped out of it. i was told by a mate that it could just be the woodruff key? but the main realer reckons its bent?
ithought this would have bad effects on the pistons etc?

I would definately seek a second opinion at a Subaru specialist, so discount your dealer

There's heaps of specialists around that would do that cheaper.

Where are you located?

If the "snout" of the crank is bent, then you would see the pulley
wobbling on tickover.Might be worth finding a decent pulley and key and trying it - lot cheaper than £2000.

any pictures of this chunk missing ?? would help loads

A rebuild including all parts and labour is usually around 2.5-3k by powerstation.
This is using a brand spanking new sti bottom end, built by subaru, then built up and fitted by themselves.

Lightbulb

We've seen this before about 5 years ago. If the crank pulley has come loose, the most likely damage is that the woodruf key has folded its slot over. This outwardly (until you take the pulley off) looks like a bent crank end (which is all but impossible BTW) as the pulley spins off centre unevenly. looks like a badly buckled bike wheel would in motion.

If that's the case, it will need a new crank. You wouldn't go in at that level and not change the Mains/big end bearings Etc. as well, so £2.5k is about right (it's what we would quote to do it).
